Nursing home information
  • Medicare's Nursing Home Compare is an online tool that provides detailed information about the past performance of every Medicare and Medicaid certified nursing home in the country.
Planning for care
  • Benefits Checkup is developed and maintained by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and is the nation's most comprehensive web-based service to screen for benefits programs for seniors with limited income and resources.

  • National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers has members nationwide who help families care for older relatives through care planning, coordination of services, counseling, management of finances, and transition to residential care settings.

  • National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys represents attorneys that specialize in providing legal expertise to older adults and their families in areas such as estate planning, Medicare and Medicaid benefits, housing issues, fraud, and residents' rights. Not all attorneys specialize in elder law. Ask a prospective attorney whether he or she regularly handles these matters.

Resident protection
  • State Ombudsman Programs investigate and resolve complaints made by or on behalf of older individuals who are residents of long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and board and care facilities. Most state ombudsman programs publish annual reports about the problems and concerns they address.

  • Consumer Consortium on Assisted Living focuses on the needs, rights, and protection of residents of assisted living communities and their families.
